Top NOM Official Defects, Takes 290,000 Facebook Fans With Him

Louis Marinelli was a key strategist for the National Organization for Marriage (NOM). He was responsible for developing the grassroots and online messaging strategy for the group and had been leading NOM’s national bus tour.

Recently, Marinelli defected to announce that he has undergone a “transition” from ardent opponent of LGBT rights and marriage equality to supporting full marriage rights for same-sex couples.

Marinelli posted this on his blog:

Having spent the last five years putting all of my political will, interest and energy into fighting against the spread of same-sex marriage as if it were a contagious disease, I must admit that it is hard for me to put the following text into words let alone utter them with my own voice.

Whether it is an issue of disbelief, shame or embarrassment, the one thing that is for sure is that I have come to this point after several months of an internal conflict with myself. That conflict gradually tore away at me until recently when I was able to for the first time simply admit to myself that I do in fact support civil marriage equality.

Apparently traveling the nation and witnessing the handful of NOM supporters and anti-LGBT protestors met with hundreds or even thousands of supporters of equality really puts things into perspective.

But the best part is, with Marinelli’s exit from the group, NOM lost 290,000 Facebook followers. The group’s page was down to only 15 fans at one point, but has since regained a few hundred crazies.

Maryland Marriage Hearing Underway

Over 140 witnesses were registered to testify at the Maryland Senate hearing today on a bill to legalize same-sex marriage.

Of course, Maggie Gallagher, the leader of the National Organization for Marriage, was there to testify in opposition.

Thankfully, a majority of the members of the Senate Judicial Proceedings Committee support the bill, so it will make it to the full Senate very soon.

Tim Hortons Rescinds Sponsorship of NOM Event

Tim Hortons has rescinded their sponsorship of a National Organization for Marriage event in Providence, Rhode Island…good news that they are not supporting anti-LGBT events, homophobia, and hatred!  Unfortunately, their logo may already be printed on the event materials.Tim Hortons

From the Tim Hortons website:

Tim Hortons responds to inquiries about Rhode Island event sponsorship

Recently, Tim Hortons was approached in Rhode Island to provide free coffee and products for a local event, as we do thousands of times a year across Canada and the United States.

For 45 years, Tim Hortons and its store owners have practiced a philosophy of giving back to the communities in which we operate. As a company, our primary focus is on helping children and supporting fundraising events for non-profit organizations and registered charities.

For this reason, Tim Hortons has not sponsored those representing religious groups, political affiliates or lobby groups.

It has come to our attention that the Rhode Island event organizer and purpose of the event fall outside of our sponsorship guidelines. As such, Tim Hortons can not provide support at the event.

Tim Hortons and its store owners have always welcomed all families and communities to its restaurants and will continue to do so. We apologize for any misunderstanding or inconvenience this may have caused.

NOM is Using its Money to Prevent Marriage Equality in NY

According to CBS, the National Organization for Marriage (NOM) have established a political action committee in New York to fight against any attempt at legalizing gay marriage.

NOM’s Executive Director Brian Brown stated the first $500,000 raised by the organization will go to financially back primary challengers to GOP Senators that vote for marriage equality.  And,

“The first half million dollars will be used in GOP primaries, but we are also looking to aid Democratic candidates who want to buck the establishment on the marriage issue, and to help in general election contests.”

Now, why can’t they use that money to actually do something that is good for the nation?  How many people could we feed or house with these funds?  Just something to think about I guess…
