Why did Lady Gaga Partner with Target, a Supporter of Anti-Gay Candidates?

When Lady Gaga announced an exclusive partnership with Target for the release of Born This Way, I thought she had sold out her gay fans for the money of corporate America.

Turns out, this partnership could be a positive thing. In an interview with Bilboard magazine, Gaga reveals she was uncomfortable with the Target partnership when it was first discussed, and she met with “the entire executive staff” at the company to clear up her misgivings. She says tell Billboard:

That discussion was one of the most intense conversations I’ve ever had in a business meeting. Part of my deal with Target is that they have to start affiliating themselves with LGBT charity groups and begin to reform and make amends for the mistakes they’ve made in the past … our relationship is hinged upon their reform in the company to support the gay community and to redeem the mistakes they’ve made supporting those [antigay] groups.

This is interesting. I cannot say I am convinced, but I can say I appreciate Gaga discussing the Target deal somewhat openly for her gay fans. It will be even more interesting to see if Target actually changes its ways, or if this was just another business promise from corporate America. In the end, this very may have been just another business decision rather than a moral one.

President Obama Comments on the Death of Ugandan LGBT Activist

President Obama in response to the murder of David Kato, an LGBT activist in Uganda:

‎LGBT rights are not special rights; they are human rights. My Administration will continue to strongly support human rights and assistance work on behalf of LGBT persons abroad. We do this because we recognize the threat faced by leaders like David Kato, and we share their commitment to advancing freedom, fairness, and equality for all.

Thank you Mr. President!

Elton John Censored By Harps, Reversed After Internet Outrage

A Harps store in Arkansas placed this shield over the US Weekly cover of Elton John, his partner, and their newly adopted son.

This makes Harps look terrible! Thankfully, after Internet outrage spread, Harps has removed the shields.

Heaven forbid we subject out children to alternative viewpoints…

Another Teen Lost to Bullying, Facebook Responds

Kameron Jacobsen was a 14-year-old from Orange County, New York that took his life after Facebook taunts about his perceived sexual orientation.

They didn’t even know his sexual orientation. This, and all forms of bullying is unacceptable and it is up to all of us to put an end to this epidemic.

Facebook issued a response to this incident:

We are deeply saddened by the tragic deaths of these students, and our hearts go out to their family and friends. These cases serve as a painful reminder of how people can help others who are either bullied or show signs of distress on Facebook. We encourage them to notify us, and we work with third party support groups including the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline to reach out to people who may need help. Our Safety Center also contains resources on how to help people who are in danger of harming themselves. These deaths are a loss to many, and it’s critical that we all work together to give hope to teens who may be feeling similarly.

All I can say is, do not stand idle and allow anyone to poke fun of someone for the sexuality. If you won’t say anything, it will not end. It is up to all of us!

FIFA Chief Says Gays Should Not Have Sex in Qatar

At a press conference yesterday, Sepp Blatter, the head of FIFA (the organization responsible for the World Cup) joked about concerns that Qatar (the host for the 2022 World Cup) is deeply homophobic.

When asked how gay fans could visit the country for the event, Blatter joked,

I would say they should refrain from any sexual activities.

With that in mind, please know that Qatar punishes homosexuality with five years in jail and a number of lashes.

Mr. Blatter owes the gay community a sincere apology, and FIFA needs to address this issue directly.

Don’t Ask Don’t Tell

Someone I know very well posted this on CNN today in response to the arguments against the repeal of DADT.  It rings very true, and I wanted to share it with you:

To a certain extent i can understand why this policy was implemented in 1993. If I stretch my imagination further, i can maybe see how this was even seen as a largely progressive measure back then. Well folks, that was 17 years ago and times are a changing. Each year, we strive to make this a more perfect union. This is not only the logical – it is a NECESSARY next step in that journey set forth over 2 centuries ago. I challenge you all to seriously take a look at the arguments that are made in opposition of the repeal and please explain to me how they’re not solely based on oppression of a minority and fear of change. Well as was proven time and time again, the fact that we are even having this debate will undoubtedly be looked at as a shameful exhibition by our children and most certaintly by the children of their own. To those who so vehemently oppose equality, I again challenge you to use that same furor in disclosing your true motivations. Tell us youre afraid, feel threatened – dont hide behind falsely constructed ideals of morality and ethics. Keep in mind, that for the 17 years during which this law has been in effect, Americans of all races, genders and yes sexual orientations, answered the call of duty to protect our common goal. And yet, here we are conjuring up arguments about how a repeal might shaken unit cohesion and undermine courage. To that I can only say that we must step back and truly understand the loyalty of these service members. Those who are willing to lay down their life, one’s most precious gift, for a country that is willing to shamefully relieve them of their duties if their true selves ever come to light. To me, that is the purest show of unwavering courage.

Indeed, we are a country of partisanship and debate. However, we engage in combat as one nation united. Defense of the ideals we hold so dear doesn’t rest with the conservative right nor is it conducted by the liberal left. Together we maintain the beacon of freedom. To those who today choose to stand on the wrong side of history, think back to your days in grammar school and recite to yourself the Pledge of Allegiance. You will end with the vision which is defended by our armed forces each and every day, “…indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.” We are all forever indebted to every man and woman who ever put on a uniform. Their work is not in vain as one day, without a doubt, we will achieve that more perfect Union.
