Study Concludes Gay Couples as Fit to Adopt

Gay or straight, the sexual orientation of adoptive parents does not have an impact on the emotional development of their children, according to a new study.

But researchers said that if parents were satisfied with the adoption process, had a stable income and functioned well as a family the risk of emotional problems in children were reduced.

“We found that sexual orientation of the adoptive parents was not a significant predictor of emotional problems,” Paige Averett, an assistant professor of social work at East Carolina University, said in a statement.
“We did find, however, that age and pre-adoptive sexual abuse were,” she added.

Averett, Blace Nalavany, also of East Carolina University, and Scott Ryan, dean of the University of Texas School of Social Work, questioned nearly 1,400 couples in the United States, including 155 gay and lesbian parents.
They used information from Florida’s public child welfare system and data from gay and lesbian couples throughout the U.S. for the study.

Each couple was questioned about themselves and their children, the family composition and dynamics, and the history of the child before the adoption.

The researchers said the findings, which are reported in the journal Adoption Quarterly, are important because it compared gay and lesbian and heterosexual couples.

“There are implications for social work educators, adoption professionals, and policy makers in this and other recent studies,” said Averett.

“We must pay attention to the data indicating that gay and lesbian parents are as fit as heterosexual parents to adopt,” Averett added, “because at least 130,000 children are depending on us to act as informed advocates on their behalf.”

The American Civil Liberties Union has said that laws and adoption agency policies have created obstacles for gay and lesbian couple who want to adopt children.

Post-1980s Children of Gay Parents Thrive in School, More Open Society

How amazing is this?

From ABC News:

In 1994, Daddy Dave and Daddy Bob prepared 5-year-old Elizabeth Wall for the first day of kindergarten in New Jersey, meeting with the principal in advance to ease her transition as the daughter of two gay men.

They never learned until years later how insensitively the school reacted to their unconventional family, according to Wall, now 20 and a sociology major at the College of Wooster in Ohio.

“They had never had gay parents before,” Wall told ABCNews.com. “It’s funny, after the principal met with them, he went to the faculty and said, ‘Who wants to take her?’”

Fortunately one teacher, who later became a close friend, volunteered and took the little girl under her wing in the Lawrenceville classroom, but for years Wall was careful about only telling close friends that she had two fathers.

“Obviously I was different and didn’t have a mom,” she said. “We are living in a world that treats our families differently. It can be isolating and challenging.”

Wall is one of a growing number of children, who affectionately call themselves “gaybies” or ” queer spawn”. Born after the AIDS crisis of the 1980s, they are now reshaping the American family.

Of the 270,000 children living with same-sex parents, about 65,000 are adopted. Most, like other Americans, are in two-child families.

AFA Upset Over AAA “Family” Discount

From Gay Agenda:

AAAHere we go again.  The anti-gay American Family Association, lead by the Religious Right nut job Donald E. Wildmon, (living proof that Satan is alive on earth and more than likely never finished the second grade) has his panties in a wad over the American Automobile Association’s decision to offer Gay & Lesbian couples a “family” membership.

On AFA’s website, they have an email form in place where anti-gay bigots can email AAA’s CEO to proclaim their displeasure with the organization for treating GLBT citizens as…well…citizens.  Below is the text of that email.

Dear Mr. Darbelnet:

My family and I are deeply shocked and saddened that AAA would alter its Family Membership policy to include recognizing homosexual couples as being “married.”

Thirty states have overwhelmingly voted to define marriage as being between one man and one woman.  Yet AAA is treating homosexual couples as if they are married.

My family and I ask you to immediately reverse this policy of recognizing homosexual couples as if they were “married.”

I will share your response with my family and friends.

“Deeply shocked and saddened.” I suppose Donny has failed to remember that certain states have ended marriage discrimination against Gay and Lesbian couples, and I suppose he also has failed to remember that many of those couples have children which make them…well…a family.

I think we should all send an email to AAA to let them know how pleased we are with their decision to treat LGBT families as citizens and thank them for taking a step in the right direction by not letting religious ideology that promotes hate, intolerance, bigotry and discrimination.

Let’s do our part to assure AAA their efforts towards equality and inclusion are greatly appreciated!

So everyone…gay, lesbian, transgendered, bisexual, allies, and friends…please take the moment out of your day to send an e-mail, a letter, or make a phone call.

We have to thank those companies that support equality for their actions and not allow them to succumb to the pressures of the enemies of equal rights.  An e-mail takes less than a moment, and it’s effect is well worth your time!
