Gay Youth and Society…It Gets Better

There is an inherent flaw in our society, one that we must live and battle with no matter who we may be.

We live in a categorical society, one which deems it necessary to assign a label to everything. Black or white, liberal or conservative, gay or straight, and on and on. There is little room for shades of grey, and many get entrenched in one side or the other, preaching the correctness of their side and missing the subtle nuances that are entirely true for both sides of the dividing line.

But what happens as a result of these labels and predefined bins we must all accept as our definition of self within society? Terrible things if our label happens to be one other than the ‘norm’ (the norm that society has chosen and promotes). Let’s just stick with the gay label. If you are gay, you are going against the societal norm and must constantly fight against oppression, misunderstanding, and pressure to question your lifestyle and ability to love. And for what? Am I any less capable of loving? Am I any less of a person? NO! Of course not.

So why do we let society fight against us? Why do we struggle incessantly for acceptance and to be allowed just to be ourselves? Why?

So many promising lives have been cut short due to discrimination, lack of self worth, and HATE. And for what? Because they were different? Is that worth ostracization to the point of compulsion to take one’s own life?

I hope one day we can look back at this civil rights movement and be glad we no longer have to lobby society for our right to be us. I hope one day we can realize the hopes of the It Gets Better Project and we can tell the youth that once upon a time some people thought gays did not deserve full equality.

But until that day, I will continue to call, write, lobby, and advocate. I do it not just for myself, but for all of the young people unfortunate enough to be growing up in an area of the world that homophobia reins. I do it to let them know that it is okay to be gay and it really will get better. There are people out there who love you for who you are and you will find those people. In time, it will get better and the world wants you to be around to see it. We need you around to witness the tides of history shift.

If you ever doubt….if you ever find yourself thinking it would be easier to give up than to fight, reach out to someone and listen when they tell you…It gets better, society will one day shed the labels used to subjugate and hate.

UPDATE: HOAX from WBC: ANONYMOUS Threatens Westboro Baptist Church, Hate Group Responds

The hacker group known only as ANONYMOUS supposedly issued a firm cease and desist order to the hate group Westboro Baptist Church in this open letter:

TO THE CONGREGANTS OF WESTBORO BAPTIST CHURCH:

We, the collective super-consciousness known as ANONYMOUS – the Voice of Free Speech & the Advocate of the People – have long heard you issue your venomous statements of hatred, and we have witnessed your flagrant and absurd displays of inimitable bigotry and intolerant fanaticism. We have always regarded you and your ilk as an assembly of graceless sociopaths and maniacal chauvinists & religious zealots, however benign, who act out for the sake of attention & in the name of religion.

Being such aggressive proponents for the Freedom of Speech & Freedom of Information as we are, we have hitherto allowed you to continue preaching your benighted gospel of hatred and your theatrical exhibitions of, not only your fascist views, but your utter lack of Christ-like attributes. You have condemned the men and women who serve, fight, and perish in the armed forces of your nation; you have prayed for and celebrated the deaths of young children, who are without fault; you have stood outside the United States National Holocaust Museum, condemning the men, women, and children who, despite their innocence, were annihilated by a tyrannical embodiment of fascism and unsubstantiated repugnance. Rather than allowing the deceased some degree of peace and respect, you instead choose to torment, harass, and assault those who grieve.

Your demonstrations and your unrelenting cascade of disparaging slurs, unfounded judgments, and prejudicial innuendos, which apparently apply to every individual numbered amongst the race of Man – except for yourselves – has frequently crossed the line which separates Freedom of Speech from deliberately utilizing the same tactics and methods of intimidation and mental & emotional abuse that have been previously exploited and employed by tyrants and dictators, fascists and terrorist organizations throughout history.

ANONYMOUS cannot abide this behavior any longer. The time for us to be idle spectators in your inhumane treatment of fellow Man has reached its apex, and we shall now be moved to action. Thus, we give you a warning: Cease & desist your protest campaign in the year 2011, return to your homes in Kansas, & close your public Web sites.

Should you ignore this warning, you will meet with the vicious retaliatory arm of ANONYMOUS: We will target your public Websites, and the propaganda & detestable doctrine that you promote will be eradicated; the damage incurred will be irreversible, and neither your institution nor your congregation will ever be able to fully recover. It is in your best interest to comply now, while the option to do so is still being offered, because we will not relent until you cease the conduction & promotion of all your bigoted operations & doctrines.

The warning has been given. What happens from here shall be determined by you.

In true form, Westboro responds:

Another Teen Lost to Bullying, Facebook Responds

Kameron Jacobsen was a 14-year-old from Orange County, New York that took his life after Facebook taunts about his perceived sexual orientation.

They didn’t even know his sexual orientation. This, and all forms of bullying is unacceptable and it is up to all of us to put an end to this epidemic.

Facebook issued a response to this incident:

We are deeply saddened by the tragic deaths of these students, and our hearts go out to their family and friends. These cases serve as a painful reminder of how people can help others who are either bullied or show signs of distress on Facebook. We encourage them to notify us, and we work with third party support groups including the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline to reach out to people who may need help. Our Safety Center also contains resources on how to help people who are in danger of harming themselves. These deaths are a loss to many, and it’s critical that we all work together to give hope to teens who may be feeling similarly.

All I can say is, do not stand idle and allow anyone to poke fun of someone for the sexuality. If you won’t say anything, it will not end. It is up to all of us!
