PR Firm That Led Successful Prop 8 Campaign Hired to Repeal Gay Marriage in Maine

After becoming the fifth state to legalize same-sex marriage on May 6 of this year, marriage equality opponents began collecting the 55,087 signatures necessary to place the law on hold pending a state-wide referendum, that could be held during the November elections.

Opponents of marriage equality have hired Schubert Flint Public Affairs, the same public relations firm that led the successful Proposition 8 campaign that overturned the same-sex marriage ruling in California.  In response, supporters of equality, Maine Freedom to Marry, have hired Jesse Connolly who headed the “Maine Won’t Discriminate” campaign of 2005, which was successful in maintaining Maine’s gay rights law.

These will be high-cost and high-profile campaigns that will undoubtedly have national implications…so keep an eye out, and do anything you can to support marriage equality in Maine and elsewhere.
